Coronavirus has arrived in the Caribbean 1

An Italian man who arrived in the Dominican Republic on Feb. 22 was announced as the country’s first confirmed case of coronavirus. Along with the first confirmed case on the French island of Guadeloupe, it marks the arrival of the international virus to a Caribbean region filled with tourists.

The Dominican Public Health Minister announced on Sunday that their case was a 62-year-old who wasn’t showing symptoms when he came to the country. He’s currently in isolation at a military hospital and “has not shown serious complications.” Another tourist, a 56-year-old man from France, is also in the hospital and is waiting on test results to see if he has the virus.

Prior to the confirmed infection, the Dominican Republic had been employing measures that some called extreme to try and prevent coronavirus from entering the country.

On Friday, it barred a cruise ship from disembarking at a port because a few passengers had flu-like symptoms, which the cruise line said was “an overreaction.” It also on Friday ordered the cancellation of all flights from Milan for 30 days.
